International Dialogue on Internship Experiences of Future Educators from Indonesia and the Philippines
The International Dialogue of Internship Experience of Indonesian and Filipino Pre-Service Teachers is part of a larger series of visits and cooperation between IAIN Kudus and a campus in the Philippines, MSU-IIT, and the Muhammadiyah University of Semarang (UNIMUS). The dean, faculty, and students from both IAIN Kudus and UNIMUS were present for this occasion, which was hosted at Tarbiyah Faculty Hall on the building's second level. This conversation will be the third major event taking place on December 20, 2022, little than a week into the visit.
At the beginning of the dialogue, the vice dean explained about the internship program or what we usually call PPL (Field Profession Practice). This Internship Program is regulated in the curriculum; we call it the KKNI (the Indonesian Qualification Framework) for students from class 2017-2020 and MBKM (the Emancipated Learning/Emancipated Campus). It applies to the students of batch 2021 to the current batch. These two curricula (KKNI and MBKM) are the same, only in terms of implementation which are different. MBKM offers learning in other study programs and/or other institutions for 3 semesters or equivalent to 60 credits. An offer is an option, not an obligation.
Students can take PPL if they pass the micro-teaching course and have passed some courses equivalent to 100 credits and up. PPL is usually carried out by students in the 7th semester. PPL takes about ¾ months. In the last stage of PPL, students are asked to be accountable for reports on the results of PPL activities.
The second session was the presentation of PPL activities by representatives of semester 7 students from IAIN Kudus and UNIMUS. Representatives from IAIN Kudus explained that Field practicing professions focus on education. When students do this program, they teach a student the material, including speaking confidently, writing and cooperating, reading and comprehending. Finally, in the internship program in Indonesia, they prepare students for about 1 month. They set their plan to achieve their objective. Followed by a presentation from UNIMUS student representatives who explained that there are 3 parts to the internship program at UNIMUS. They use the Kampus Mengajar program for about 3 months. The agenda is almost the same as the internship in IAIN Kudus. They not only teach English programs but also all subjects. The goal is to gain experience, knowledge, and try to be the best one to teach students.
The next session is a reflection by Prof. Monera A. Salic-Harulla. Ph.D.. She reflected that the curriculum in Indonesia, especially in IAIN Kudus different from UNIMUS. IAIN has an internship program, but MSU-IIT has field teaching practice similar to the internship program, a little bit different from UNIMUS, an internship program that has integrated, and finally, the goal of its program is to improve. Mrs. Monera proved the picture, explained student activity in the pandemic era, showed how to meet the student, and gave many more examples. So this sharing event creates a new relationship through an internship program between IAIN Kudus, UNIMUS Semarang, and the reflection from MSU-IIT Philippines.
